How to Sell a George Foreman Outdoor Grill

In this article I am going to teach you how to sell a George Foreman Outdoor Grill.  Now notice that I did not say I was going to teach you how to sell a George Foreman grill or even just a grill.  Honestly, I am not that good enough of a salesperson to pull that off and I don't think I can show you something I am not good enough at.  But I am confident that I can teach you how to sell a George Foreman Outdoor Grill. Why?  That's what this article is about.

I want you to try a little experiment.  Go to Google.com and type the following (including quotes).  "George Foreman Outdoor Grill".  When the results are returned, near the top (to the right) is a statistic that is prefaced with the words "Result 1-10 of about" and then another number.  That number at the time of this writing was 5660.  What this means is there are 5660 pages on the web that have optimized exactly for this phrase.  Now I want you to type into Google (again with quotes) "George Foreman Grill". You should see the results statistic at a much higher number (at the time of this writing it was 315,000).  Obviously this more general phrase is much more competitive and hence would be much more difficult to attempt to sell. It is not necessarily impossible to sell.  It's just that the odds are stacked against you.  You can try the same search with the word "grill" (with or without quotes since it's only one word.)  You should get a march larger number.

So now you can see why I can teach you how to sell a George Foreman Outdoor Grill rather than something more general.  The demand is there and the competition is not too bad (you will get a feel for that results number the more you do this.  I typically like to target results that are under 15,000. The lower the number the better.)

Okay, so we figured out how to target a specific audience that seems to be hungry for this product.  I am sure at this point you are thinking that you don't have any George Foreman Outdoor Grills to sell.  You may have read that in order to get a product at a decent price you need to buy in bulk and then store that product somewhere while you sell it.  Wait to you have to pitch that one to your spouse!  Don't worry (tell your spouse not to worry either)  There is a way around this where you won't have to buy and store anything at all.

You can accomplish that with a business model known as Affiliate Marketing.  Essentially this is how it works.  I create a web page (the industry calls these landing pages) that would have information about the product I am looking to sell.  The page would be optimized for the search phrase that I am targeting.  Can you guess what phrase I am targeting in this article?  If you said "George Foreman Outdoor Grill" give yourself a gold star. Then I would have coded links on that page that would take readers to the vendor's sales page.  If a reader decides to buy the product from that link, I would get a percentage of the sale.  The mechanics of how this work are not really necessary to understand.  There are companies that handle these transactions and they are free to join (more on that in the resources section).

Suppose I wanted to sell a George Foreman Outdoor Grill (that is what the article is about, after all).  Where would I find one?  I could do a Google search and try to locate the manufacturer.  Perhaps I could even try to get in contact with George Foreman although I hear he's pretty busy these days.  Another technique that I often use is to search in a super store like Walmart and then I would find out if they had an affiliate program (and they do).  So I use my browser, head on over to walmart.com and search for George Foreman Outdoor Grill and see what comes up.  Go ahead and try this yourself.  You should see something interesting when you do that search.  There is nothing that comes up with the exact phrase "George Foreman Outdoor Grill".  There is a George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Grill and then there are a whole bunch of other variations on the George Foreman grill theme.  So does this present a problem for us?  Not at all.

The fact is when searched in Google for the term "George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Grill" that result number is even greater than my initial phrase are as far as competition goes.  But there are so many other variations that should work for us.  Here are some of the variations:

• George Foreman 360 Grill
• George Foreman Digital Grill
• George Foreman 36" Grill
• George Foreman G-Broil Grill

You get the idea.  There are many others.  You'll need to do keyword research (like we did above) on each of these terms and then decide which ones seem to have the least amount of competition.  Those are the ones you'll want to create landing pages for.  You could even do a whole line of George Foreman grills with a page dedicated to each product.  The possibilities are endless.

If you get stuck on some phrases that just seem way too competitive you can throw some modifiers in your search.  For instance, the phrase "George Foreman 360 Grill" will be way too competitive.  But if you preface it with "red George Foreman 360 grill" you will see that this is much less competitive.  You'd be surprised how many people will search for specific modifiers such as color, etc.  In fact, those people are typically the ones that are ready to buy because they know exactly what they want.  They want this product and they want it to be red.

I picked the George Foreman Outdoor Grill because it showed many different aspects of what can happen when you deal with Affiliate Marketing.  The term started out with little competition but then when I searched for it in Walmart.com, it didn't come up with that exact phrase so I had to adjust my campaign a bit.  I could have continued my search for that exact phrase but I didn't need to in this case because there are viable alternatives that I can target. So get out there and start selling the George Foreman Outdoor Grill (or whatever variation you think will work).
