How Do I get my horse to stand still when tied?

She wont stand still unless cross tied.she dances and dances..no pulling..i will give her a smack on the belly and tell her no..real harsh..she stops for a second and does it again....shes not hurt..just being head strong..plz any ideas?

If you've ever seen horses at a rodeo, ranch branding, or even a mounted police horse....they stand absolutely still when tied or asked to stop. How? Because that's what they've practiced for hours at a time and day after day. You see horses tied behind the chutes at a rodeo, half asleep, one hoof tipped up to rest, and they're perfectly happy and content. They weren't always like that....they learned it through consistent practice.

So tie your mare (not cross ties) and let her stand. Make sure you tie her high enough and safe enough. Then do something else (muck stalls, work on another horse, etc.) while she fusses. Don't go to her or comfort her or even worry about her. Just keep an eye on her, and leave her an hour or so. Won't hurt her at all.

Do this for a week or two, and I can guarantee some changes will start to show. Good luck!
