In the early 1990's, they generally were *not* considered a great band. They were latecomers to grunge and were frequently accused of stealing Pearl Jam's sound, especially vocally. Their first album was a hit, but critics dissed it.

By the mid-1990's, their reputation had improved. Their albums showed less Pearl Jam influence and more of their own unique sound. They received better critical reception, but still got their share of lukewarm reviews.

By the late 1990's, as heroin became a problem, the bad reviews returned.

In retrospect, the band is generally more favorably looked upon now than it was back in the 1990's. They do have some devoted fans, and their early-mid 90's albums receive some modest praise. But at the time, particularly in the early days, it was a band that people loved to dis.
