A CONVERSATION WITH JOHN OATES

With over 60 million albums sold, DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES' rich repertoire has garnered a total of 8 #1 hit singles along with dozens of hits throughout the 70's, 80's, 90's, including 2002's "Do It For Love,". Other top singles include:  "Rich Girl," "Kiss On My List," "Maneater," "Private Eyes," "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do), "Sara Smile," "She's Gone," and  "One On One,". Their trademark sound of rock ‘n' soul can be heard in the harmonies of today's young pop stars, in the return to radio of sophisticated R & B, even in the black/white demographics of hip-hop and rap-rock fusion.

Daryl Hall & John Oates bring their collection of hits to the Pompano Beach Amphitheater on May 30th. Prior to taking the stage, John Oates took some time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions from his Aspen, Colorado home.

Q: Who were some of your early musical influences?

A: Well... It goes back to the fifties, the early rock n' roll. I think the first people I really liked were Chuck Berry, Little Richard. Then came the sixties. People like... gosh, there are so many. People like Gary US Bonds, The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield. Them moving into the folk revival of the mid-sixties with people like Doc Watson, Mississippi John Hurt. I liked all that kind of stuff. I like the R&B stuff of the sixties: The Temptations, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye. It just goes on and on.

Q: You must have one of the best record collections around.

A: I try to keep up with it and put everything on CD's. I've got some really cool stuff that I have kept over the years that I really, really like.

Q: Have you ever thought about doing an album of covers of some of these great songs?

A: You know... It is just so crazy that you said that because that is exactly what I am doing. In fact, I am starting it on Monday ( May 17). It's really weird that you said that because I have been rehearsing it all week. I am doing an album of all of the songs I liked as a kid, a very select group of songs from exactly the people I just mentioned.

Q: How did you and Daryl Hall first meet?

A: We met in Philadelphia right out of high school. He had a band and I had a band, separate bands, and we both had made our first record singles that were both being played on Philadelphia R&B stations. We were individually asked to perform at this teenage thing  and we were waiting backstage and a fight broke out in the audience. It was kind of a gang fight and it was in a bad area of Philadelphia. We basically left the building to the freight elevator, and that's how we met.

Q: It is well known that Elton John & Bernie Taupin have a certain way they achieved songwriting success. Bernie writes the lyric, while Elton composes the melody. Do you and Daryl have a songwriting formula that you follow?

A: No. The best formula is no formula. Bernie Taupin & Elton John are very traditional songwriting team, almost that they are very old school. It goes back to the Brill Building and goes back to Rogers & Hart, Cole Porter, the Gershwin Brothers. Daryl and I are completely different. We both write lyrics and we both write music, we both sing, we both play.  We both do everything and we blend our talents and skills depending on the song. Usually if one person generates the initial idea, they carry the ball, and the other person kinda helps with ideas and editing and kinda putting it together.

Q: On the new Hall & Oates box set "Do What You Want, Be Who You Are" there is a ton of early material. It includes the song "Need Your Love". How old were you when you wrote and recorded that song?

A: I was 17 and I recorded it with my high school band and that was the exact song that was on the radio when I just mentioned how Daryl and I had met. The other song that you heard, Daryl's song, Girl I Love You by The Temptones, that was his song that was on the radio. They were they two songs they were playing when we first met.

Q: You guy's have been at this gig for nearly forty years and have been recognized by The Recording Industry Association Of America as the top-selling duo in rock history. With all of your accomplishments, what is next for John Oates ?

A: You know... I think I am really fortunate to be in a position to do a lot of things that I really like. Daryl and I are very interested in our individual projects. He has his own internet show called Live From Daryl's House. I have a songwriting festival am putting on this year in Aspen, Colorado where I live. That will be starting this September and be an annual event and will be held September 16-19. We are inviting songwriters from all over the country to come out to Aspen and play all over the city for the weekend.  It's gonna be a really great event. These are the things I am really interested in. I am recording a new album in Nashville on Monday and that is where were at right now. We still go out on the road and we still enjoy playing the Hall & Oates songs, and we do that frequently throughout the year so it's a good balance

Q: Any parting words for your fans?

A: We are just very appreciative that our old fans have stuck with us throughout all of these years and have supported us so strongly over the years and really happy about the fact of all the new young fans that have been turning out to our shows and re-discovering our music. Were really feelin' good about what's been going on.
